What is Google AI Mode, compared with AI Overviews?

Being cited in AI Overviews does not establish whether your business appears in AI Mode.

Steen Stones · Reviewed

Google AI Mode gives you AI answers, with follow-up questions and links to websites for further reading. It helps you explore topics and compare options, while AI Overviews explain the gist of a complicated question. Google says the features can give different answers and link to different pages for the same subject.

How does AI Mode differ from AI Overviews?

AI Mode lets you keep asking questions, with links to websites that support the answers you receive. Google describes it as useful when a question needs more exploration, reasoning or a detailed comparison.

AI Overviews explain the gist of a complicated question, with links that let you explore further. Google says the features may use different models and techniques, which means their answers and links can vary.

Do AI Mode and AI Overviews cite the same websites?

Ahrefs found that AI Mode and AI Overviews often chose different pages to answer the same question. It reported 13.7% citation overlap in September 2025 US data, examining 540,000 query pairs for that comparison.

Ahrefs compared single generations of the answers, so the result describes the responses captured in that study. It cannot tell a business which pages these features would select across every repeated search.

Semrush found that AI Mode linked to more distinct websites per query than AI Overviews in its study. That measures the range of websites, while Ahrefs measured how often the citations overlapped between the features.

What did SE Ranking find?

SE Ranking found average exact page overlap of 10.7% between AI Mode and AI Overviews in its study. It collected the data on June 20, 2025, using queries entered from the United States.

The studies used different dates and comparisons, so combining their percentages would give a misleading result. Their US samples help explain the distinction, but they do not establish a citation rate for UK businesses.

What does this mean for a business that wants to appear?

A business needs its page indexed and eligible for a search snippet to qualify as a supporting link. Google applies that requirement to AI Mode and AI Overviews, so the eligibility check starts in the same place.

The studies give businesses a reason to check AI Mode and AI Overviews separately when reviewing their appearance. A citation in an AI Overview does not establish that AI Mode chose the same page.

A page being eligible means it can qualify, while a citation shows that an answer actually selected it. Keeping that distinction clear avoids mistaking a technical requirement for evidence that a business has been cited.
