Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit?

Give it real evidence and a clear question, then check the findings before changing your website.

Yes. ChatGPT can analyse uploaded SEO data, explain findings and read current web sources when search is used. To make that useful, ask what it actually checked. A file may be only partly analysed, and a confident answer can still be wrong.

Use ChatGPT to examine the data you supply

Upload structured data or connect an available source

Prepare and review the analysis

  1. Use clear column names and one record per row
  2. Specify the question and columns to examine
  3. Review generated code, outputs and assumptions
  4. If incomplete, ask for specific sections or split the file

OpenAI’s data-analysis guidance. Uploading a file successfully does not prove that all of it has been analysed.

What can ChatGPT usefully do with SEO data?

An SEO report gives ChatGPT something concrete to work with. It can answer questions about the file and turn data into tables or charts. Tell it what you want to learn, rather than asking for a general verdict.

Use clear column names and one record per row, then say which columns to compare. Explain what you want the calculation to show so you can check whether the answer does the job.

When ChatGPT uses Python, its calculation tool, ask to see the working behind the finding. OpenAI tells users to review the code, results and assumptions before relying on the analysis.

Is giving ChatGPT your website address enough?

An address tells ChatGPT where to look, but does not show how much it has reviewed. Search and deep research can read current pages, although technical problems, paywalls or crawling rules can prevent access.

Browsing and file analysis do different jobs. OpenAI says its Python analysis environment cannot fetch outside web data. Supply that data yourself, either by uploading it or through an available connection.

Ask which pages and files were examined, and which could not be read. A check without evidence belongs on the unfinished list.

Can AI work with a website crawler?

Screaming Frog SEO Spider can connect to OpenAI and other AI providers to run prompts on data collected during a crawl. That combines website checking with AI analysis.

A crawl checks pages automatically. Screaming Frog’s prompt tester lets you enter a page address and inspect the extracted content alongside the AI response. You can then compare the finding with what the software actually read.

The connection runs inside the crawler software; pasting an address into ChatGPT does not create it. Screaming Frog also says generated page descriptions should be reviewed before publication.

How do you check a finding about Google?

Check claims about Google against Google’s own evidence. Search Console’s URL Inspection tool shows what Google knows about a page, including whether it could fetch it during the last indexing attempt.

The default view reflects Google’s last crawl and indexing of the page, when it read and recorded it for search. The live test asks whether the current page seems eligible to appear. It does not confirm that the page appears in results.

The live test can show a screenshot of the page Google retrieved. Use it alongside the written finding to see more than ChatGPT’s description alone.

What should you ask for before acting?

Ask for each finding’s evidence, the calculation used and anything left unchecked. A successful upload can still be too large or poorly organised for complete analysis. The file arriving is not proof that every part was reviewed.

For an incomplete result, ask about particular sheets, rows or columns, or split the file into smaller parts. A narrower question makes the answer easier to compare with the original data.

You want a finding you can verify and act on. Use ChatGPT to explain the evidence, then check its working before turning the answer into a website change.

Common questions

Can ChatGPT check my whole site from one prompt?
Do not assume a whole-site check happened. ChatGPT can use current web sources, but access can fail, and even uploaded files may not be analysed completely. Ask what was actually read and what remains unchecked.
Can ChatGPT tell me whether Google has indexed a page?
Use Search Console’s URL Inspection information as the evidence. Its stored Google Index view and live eligibility test answer different questions, so keep that difference in any summary ChatGPT produces.
Can I publish the fixes ChatGPT suggests straight away?
Review them first. OpenAI says to inspect analysis and assumptions, while Screaming Frog specifically advises reviewing generated descriptions before publication. A plausible answer is not enough to establish that a change is right.
