# Where AI pulls its answers, and why it's rarely your homepage

When an engine recommends a firm, it's usually citing somewhere other than that firm's own site. Here's what the public data says about which off-site sources carry weight, and what it means for your digital PR.

Ask an engine to recommend a firm and watch where the citation points. It's rarely the firm's own homepage. Engines assemble an answer from wherever your brand has earned a footprint, so the highest-value work is often off your own site entirely. Two things from the public research are worth building around.

## YouTube is now the single biggest off-site source

16%

share of LLM answers citing YouTube, ahead of Reddit at 10%

Educational long-form video, content that explains the problem you solve, not a product demo, is now the most-cited off-site source, ahead of Reddit, Wikipedia and Quora. Demos don't get cited; explainers do. For a firm that already has expertise, this is a channel that rewards teaching over selling.

## Mentions matter more than backlinks

The instinct from a decade of SEO is to chase links. The GEO research points the other way: studies show near-zero correlation between backlinks and AI citation, and engines instead weight unlinked brand mentions across many credible domains. So the digital-PR job is mentions-first, being talked about accurately in the places engines trust, not link-count.

- Long-form educational video (YouTube) about the problem, not the product.
- Genuine participation in the communities your buyers actually use.
- Review platforms and trade press relevant to your sector.
- Consistent, accurate brand mentions across many domains, links are a bonus, not the goal.

> AI doesn't recommend from your homepage. It pulls from wherever your brand has earned a footprint.

## Common questions

### So links don't matter at all?

They still help conventional SEO, which engines also read. The point is narrower: for AI citation specifically, an accurate unlinked mention on a credible domain often does more than a link. Build for mentions first.

### Is this allowed if you're regulated?

Yes, done properly. Community participation and trade-press commentary are normal for professional firms; the discipline is that every claim still has to clear the relevant rules (FCA, SRA, ASA). Compliant by construction, not after the fact.
