# What is query fan-out, and why does it matter?

Your buyer asks a question, but Google may search for several parts of the answer.

**Steen Stones** · Reviewed 7 Oct 2026

Query fan-out means turning a question into several related searches and running them at the same time. Google uses the results to build an answer that draws on different topics and sources.

A person asks Google AI Mode a question

Related searches run together

1. The model generates related searches across subtopics
2. Google retrieves relevant pages from its search index
3. AI Mode brings the results together into a response

## How does query fan-out work?

Query fan-out helps Google find information about different parts of a question. It runs related searches together, then uses their results to build an answer.

Imagine a buyer asking which software would suit a growing team. Related searches could cover price, moving existing work and product comparisons. This example shows the idea; it is not a recording of searches Google ran.

So when we plan a page, we would look beyond the main search phrase. Ask what the buyer needs to understand before choosing.

## Why does it matter for the sources Google uses?

The answer can draw on several topics and sources because Google runs these related searches. It uses relevant, current pages from its search index to help improve the accuracy of AI responses.

Your page can be relevant without repeating the exact search wording. Google says it can understand that connection even when the words do not match.

Finding sources is only part of choosing what goes into an answer. Google says AI Mode also uses its core quality and ranking systems.

## Should you create a page for every related search?

Do not turn every wording into a separate page just to influence Google’s rankings or AI answers. Google says creating search variations mainly for that purpose breaks its scaled content abuse policy.

We would check whether a related question reveals something useful missing from an existing page. Explain that point clearly rather than repeat the same answer elsewhere. That follows Google’s advice to make content easy to read.

Use what your company knows from doing the work. Google asks for original knowledge, which is a better reason to write than repeating another keyword variation.

## What does a fan-out test tell you?

Dan Hinckley warns that a single fan-out test gives you a sample. It is a useful caution against treating a test as every search your buyers could trigger.

Our software example helps you think through what a buyer might need, but it does not show searches Google actually ran. Keep examples and observations separate when planning your content.

> Running a query fan-out once shows you a sample, not the space.

## How should you write for this?

Answer the reader’s question clearly, then explain the related details they need. That follows Google’s advice to make content easy for people to understand.

Keep explanations together where that helps the reader. Google says you do not need to break content into tiny pieces for AI.

We would begin with a page about a choice your buyers make. Read it as a buyer, find what needs explaining and add knowledge your company can support.

## Common questions

### Is query fan-out just repeating the same search?

No. Google describes related searches across subtopics and different sources, whose results contribute to the answer.

### Do I need exact keyword matches?

Google says it can understand a page’s relevance even without an exact match to the search wording.

### Should every answer be a tiny block of text?

No. Google says there is no requirement to split your content into tiny pieces for AI to understand it.
