# Which AI search engines do UK buyers use in 2026?

Where you check your company should depend on your buyers, not the AI tool your team happens to like.

**Steen Stones** · Reviewed 7 Oct 2026

Start by checking ChatGPT and Google Search’s AI answers. ChatGPT leads YouGov’s UK preference ranking, while Google brings AI answers into everyday searches. That makes them useful starting points, although neither study tells you which engine produces the most purchases.

ChatGPT led preference among these UK AI users Selected tools in YouGov’s 2026 ranking. This is overall tool preference, not search market share or business-buying use.

- ChatGPT 30%
- Alexa 12.7%
- Copilot 11.6%
- Gemini 11.3%
- Claude 4.3%

## Which AI tool leads in the UK?

ChatGPT comes first in YouGov’s UK preference ranking: 30.0% chose it as the AI tool they prefer most. The research covers March to July 2026, giving you a useful starting point for checking what AI says about your company.

Alexa follows at 12.7%, ahead of Copilot at 11.6%, Gemini at 11.3% and Claude at 4.3%. The question concerns favourite tools among AI users, so these figures do not measure searches, purchases or enquiries.

YouGov asks which tools people would consider, then which they prefer. That tells you their favourite assistant, but not where they last compared suppliers. Keep that difference in mind when deciding where to spend your time.

## Why should Google Search stay in your checks?

Someone making an ordinary Google search can encounter an AI answer without asking for one. Ofcom found that people usually met these summaries inside search services rather than seeking them out.

Ofcom’s report on the UK in 2025 put Google Search’s reach at 82% of adults. It also found that 53% often saw AI search summaries. Neither figure counts people choosing Gemini as their favourite assistant.

Keep Google Search’s AI answers separate from the assistant preference table. Combining the figures would give you a league table whose entries measure different things.

## Does the right choice change with your audience?

Yes. ChatGPT led preference among Gen Z, Millennials and Gen X, while Baby Boomers+ preferred Alexa over ChatGPT. Your buyers may follow a different pattern from the national average.

Copilot also did better among knowledge workers, with 15.9% preference compared with 8.6% among frontline workers. YouGov asked about their overall favourite, so this does not tell us which tool they use for work.

On LinkedIn, Blue Array founder and CEO Simon Schnieders warns against assuming your audience shares your choice of tools. His observation sits alongside the survey evidence.

> your personal tech stack rarely reflects the habits of the audience you are trying to reach.

## What does this tell you about buying?

A favourite-tool poll helps you choose where to look. It cannot tell you whether an AI answer helped someone choose your company, and neither can a search service’s reach.

Visit counts need the same care. Ofcom recorded 1.8 billion UK ChatGPT visits in the first eight months of 2025. That is a count of visits, not individual people or purchases.

We suggest starting with the national findings, then asking buyers which tools helped them compare options. Keep those answers alongside the enquiries and sales you can trace. They give you more to work with than a favourite-tool poll alone.

## Which engines should you check first?

Begin with ChatGPT and Google Search’s AI answers, then widen your checks to suit your audience. Copilot and Gemini also sit near the top of the UK preference ranking. Treat this as a starting point, not a buying-impact ranking.

Claude and Perplexity both appear in YouGov’s top 10, so keep them under consideration too. National popularity cannot settle whether a tool matters to your buyers when preferences differ between groups.

Then look at what those tools say about the problem your company solves. The research helps you choose where to check; the next job is to read the answers buyers would see.

## Common questions

### Is ChatGPT the most popular AI search engine in the UK?

ChatGPT leads YouGov’s UK AI preference ranking, but that survey measures a favourite tool rather than search volume or purchases. Describe the result as preference, not AI search market share.

### Does Gemini’s preference score include all Google AI answers?

The preference ranking asks respondents which assistant they prefer. Ofcom’s research on AI summaries inside search measures something different. Do not treat Gemini’s score as the reach of all Google AI answers.

### Should a smaller company check every AI tool?

Start with the broad UK evidence, then use what you learn about your buyers to choose further checks. Preferences differ between age and work groups, which is a reason to test your assumptions.
