# Do G2 and Capterra reviews affect ChatGPT recommendations?

Your review profile matters. So does the version of it repeated across the web.

**Steen Stones** · Reviewed 8 Oct 2026

Yes, keep your G2 and Capterra profiles accurate and build genuine reviews. Review platforms appear in ChatGPT’s cited sources, and comparison articles offer another route into answers. Check both the original profile and what other publishers say about you.

## What did the research find?

G2 published a study of about 35,000 ChatGPT citations from the US in December 2025. Each website counted once per run and type of buyer question. Keep that scope in mind when using it for a UK company.

Review sites took 7.4% of citations when buyers were discovering products, and 13.2% when they were evaluating them. They had a larger share in the group comparing options.

G2, Capterra, Software Advice and GetApp together accounted for 84% of citations within the review-platform category. That is not their share of all ChatGPT citations.

## Did AI cite a review, a list or someone else’s summary?

A link to G2 does not necessarily point to your product’s review page. Ahrefs distinguishes G2-style ranking pages from blog lists, and notes that G2’s learning site contains different types of content. Open the actual URL before deciding what was used.

A review platform can also influence an answer indirectly. In one example in the Ahrefs research, ChatGPT mentioned Kilo alongside the company’s announcement of a Capterra award. The review platform’s information reached the answer through another page.

Check the route into the answer

A review-platform page

1. Is it your product profile, a category list or a comparison?
2. Read what that exact page says about your product
3. Record whether the answer names or recommends you

Another publisher’s page

1. Check any quoted rating, review count or award
2. Compare it with the original review-platform record
3. Note the date and any mismatch

A checking method, not a measured breakdown of how often each route occurs.

## Why can old ratings keep causing problems?

Imagine a comparison article still showing an old rating or review count after your profile has improved. If an AI answer uses that article, the stale figure may travel with it. This is a risk to check, not a claim that our current evidence measures how often it happens.

Our recommendation is to keep a short list of pages repeating your review data. Record the figure, its date and the original profile link. Where a publisher’s information is wrong, send the current evidence and ask for a correction. Updating your own profile is only part of that job.

## Does that mean more reviews bring more recommendations?

The study did not test what happened after a company added reviews. It gives you a reason to check which review sites appear for your category, not a forecast of what a review campaign will achieve.

In a separate G2 report, 45% of surveyed software buyers said review-site citations gave them the most confidence in an AI answer. That is about buyer trust. It does not explain how ChatGPT picked a supplier.

## Where should you start?

Open the pages cited for questions about your product category. Do they cover the right products? Ahrefs recommends this check because a cited page can be only loosely connected to the question.

Check the profiles you control next. G2 recommends keeping company and product information accurate. Ahrefs recommends claiming review profiles, completing the fields and asking customers for reviews.

We suggest a short record of what each cited page gets right or wrong about your product. Start with those gaps, so the work has a purpose beyond adding to a review count.

## Is one engine better at checking the original source?

The citation study discussed here covers ChatGPT. It cannot rank other engines for checking original reviews. To answer that question for your category, we would repeat the same buyer questions across engines, then classify the exact pages cited and check the accuracy of any ratings quoted.

Keep citation and browsing evidence separate. OpenAI documents a sources list that can contain more consulted URLs than the inline citations. An absent G2 citation therefore does not prove the system never consulted G2.

## What should you measure?

We suggest keeping separate notes for whether a review page was cited, whether your product was named and whether it was recommended for the buyer’s need. A link to a platform should not count as a recommendation for your company.

For a UK software company, check the questions its buyers ask. The study covered US ChatGPT results in December 2025. It cannot tell you where your product stands in the UK today.

## Common questions

### Should we complete our G2 and Capterra profiles?

Accurate profiles are a sensible starting point. G2 recommends checking the company and product details you control, while Ahrefs recommends completing review profiles and asking customers for reviews.

### How many reviews do we need for ChatGPT?

This citation study does not establish a required review count. It counted cited websites, rather than testing how many reviews a product needed.

### Does G2 account for 84% of all ChatGPT citations?

No. The figure covers G2, Capterra, Software Advice and GetApp together, within the review-platform category in this study. It is not a share of all citations.

### Is a G2 citation proof that AI read our reviews?

No. Inspect the exact linked page. It may be a category ranking, comparison or article rather than your profile. A citation alone also does not establish that every review on the page was read.
