# Does schema markup help you get cited by AI?

Know what the extra code can do before you pay for it.

**Steen Stones** · Reviewed 8 Oct 2026

Adding schema is not a proven shortcut to more AI citations. Google says its AI search does not require it, though it can help with other search features. Ahrefs found no clear boost for pages already being cited.

| [Do Google AI features need special schema?](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) | Do not treat special markup as an entry requirement. | Google says none is required for generative AI search. |
| [Are you seeking a supported rich result?](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) | Use accurate structured data and the required properties. | Google recommends it for rich-result eligibility. |

## What is schema markup for?

Schema markup labels the information on a web page using structured data, so its contents are described in a standard way. Think of labels attached to the information, rather than extra copy for visitors.

Google recommends schema for rich results, the search listings with extra detail. Keep accurate markup for that purpose. It gives the work a clearer aim than adding code in the hope that ChatGPT will cite you.

## What did the 2026 research find?

Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema between August 2025 and March 2026. Against 4,000 comparison pages, it found no major rise in citations.

Compared with unchanged pages, AI Mode citations rose 2.4% and ChatGPT 2.2%, but those small differences could be noise. AI Overview citations fell 4.6%, though other changes could have contributed.

The study mixed schema types and followed already-cited pages for 30 days after the change. That leaves new pages, individual types and longer-term effects unanswered.

## What should you check on your website?

Read the page before checking its code. Google says the markup must describe information visitors can see, without fake reviews or unrelated claims.

Check which Google search feature the markup supports, then make sure its required details are there. Add optional details where they are accurate, rather than filling every field with poor information.

Use Google's Rich Results Test during the work, then check the rich-result status reports once it is live. Read the page as well, because a tool cannot check every quality rule.

## How can you tell whether adding schema helped?

Record when you add schema and leave other edits out of the test. Compare with unchanged pages: similar movement may reflect the platform, rather than your change.

Ahrefs content marketer Louise Linehan makes the point in the study's testing advice.

> If both groups moved by similar amounts, that's more to do with the platform trend than the schema.

## Where should your effort go next?

Keep the markup accurate and useful for the search feature you want. Make the page easy to follow too, with clear headings and paragraphs that answer the question.

Give the person doing the work a clear brief: describe the visible page accurately, meet the requirements and check the result. Filling more fields is not the aim.

## Common questions

### Should I remove schema that is already on my site?

Google still recommends structured data for rich results. Check that yours describes the visible page accurately and includes the required details.

### Does Google require special schema for AI search?

No. Google says its generative AI search does not require structured data or special schema.org markup.

### Does a valid test result mean the markup is good?

Use the tool to check the code, then read the page for accuracy. Google says automated tools cannot easily check its quality rules.
