# Does an llms.txt file help a site get cited by AI search?

The case for adding llms.txt depends on whether the job is earning citations or helping tools read your documentation.

**Steen Stones** · Reviewed 6 Oct 2026

If you want more AI citations, the research reviewed gives you no established reason to add llms.txt. Google says it does not use these special files for search, and SE Ranking found no link with citation frequency. The proposal has a different purpose: helping tools find and read content, mainly software documentation.

## What does an llms.txt file do?

An llms.txt file is a short guide to your website for an AI tool. It provides background information and links to detailed Markdown pages, which use simple text formatting. The proposal says software documentation is its main use.

Helping a tool find its way through documentation is a clear job for the file. Whether that earns your company more search citations is a separate question, which SE Ranking’s research examines.

## Does Google need it?

Google says it does not use these special files for Search, including its generative AI features. So if Google visibility is your reason for adding llms.txt, its own guidance says the file is unnecessary.

Google says your page must be in its search index and eligible to appear with a snippet, the short extract alongside a result. Those are the requirements to check before treating a new file as the missing ingredient.

## What does the evidence actually show?

The sources answer different questions. A bot requesting an llms.txt file, a platform using it, and a website earning a citation are separate events.

| [Google’s guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) | Requirements for Google Search and its generative AI features | Google says it does not use these special AI text files. Pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. | llms.txt is not a requirement for Google’s AI search features. This statement does not cover every AI platform. |
| [Ahrefs](https://ahrefs.com/blog/llmstxt-study/) | Requests to llms.txt files in its sample | 97% received no traffic in May 2026. Ahrefs also cautions that fetching a file does not prove its contents were used. | File access alone cannot establish an effect on citations. |
| [SE Ranking](https://seranking.com/blog/llms-txt/) | The relationship between llms.txt and AI citations across 300,000 domains | It reported no correlation between having the file and AI citations. | The study does not establish a citation benefit. It is not proof that no implementation could ever help. |
| [OtterlyAI](https://otterly.ai/blog/the-llms-txt-experiment/) | AI bot activity during a 90-day experiment | Only 84 requests targeted llms.txt among more than 62,100 AI bot visits. | Requests were uncommon in this experiment. These counts do not demonstrate a citation benefit. |

## Should your business add an llms.txt file?

If your aim is more AI search citations, Avouch would not prioritise llms.txt on the evidence reviewed. First check that your important pages can be discovered, read and understood. For Google’s generative AI features, being indexed and eligible for a search snippet is an explicit requirement.

If you maintain software documentation, there may be a separate reason to use llms.txt. The original proposal describes a guide containing context and links to more detailed documentation. In that case, identify the tool or workflow that will use it and test whether it helps that task.

Our recommendation is to judge the file against its intended job. A successful request proves that a tool fetched it. It does not, by itself, prove that the file helped your business earn a citation.

## Common questions

### Is llms.txt required for Google’s AI search features?

No. Google says it does not use these special files and that they are unnecessary for appearing in its generative search features.

### Does a bot visiting llms.txt prove it helped?

No. Ahrefs cautions that fetching the file does not prove the bot acted on its contents.

### Is there still a reason to publish one?

It can provide tools with background information and links to documentation, which is the use the proposal describes. That is a reason to consider it for those tools, without assuming it will earn more AI citations.
