# AEO, GEO and SEO: what is the difference?

Before paying for another search marketing service, check what the work adds to your existing plan.

**Steen Stones** · Reviewed 7 Oct 2026

SEO helps search engines understand your content so people can find your site. AEO focuses on direct AI answers, while GEO focuses on visibility in generated responses. The work overlaps: AEO complements SEO, and Google’s AI features still use its core Search systems.

Three overlapping aims, compared

| Term | Main aim | Where the work overlaps |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| [SEO: Google’s definition](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide) | Help search understand content and people find your site. | Google’s AI features still use core Search systems. |
| [AEO: Ahrefs’ definition](https://ahrefs.com/aeo/what-is-aeo) | Make content useful and visible in direct AI answers. | Complements SEO rather than replacing it. |
| [GEO: the research definition](https://arxiv.org/html/2311.09735v3) | Improve visibility within generated responses. | Overlaps with the aim of appearing in direct AI answers. |

## What does each term mean?

SEO means search engine optimisation. Google describes it as helping search understand your content and people decide whether to visit your site.

AEO means answer engine optimisation, making content visible and useful to AI systems that answer questions directly. GEO means generative engine optimisation, improving visibility within generated responses. Those aims overlap, so the definitions do not divide the work neatly.

Use the terms to explain what needs improving, then ask what someone will actually do about it.

## Does GEO or AEO replace SEO?

Three aims, overlapping work

Start with the outcome you need

SEO

1. Help search engines understand your content.
2. Help people decide whether to visit your site.

AEO

1. Make content useful to systems that answer questions directly.
2. Build on the work already covered by SEO.

GEO

1. Improve visibility in generated responses.
2. Check the answers and sources that appear.

These are related aims, not three separate technical systems or a sequence you must buy. Google’s AI features still use its core Search systems.

AEO complements SEO, according to Ahrefs. Google also says SEO practices remain relevant because its AI features depend on its core Search ranking and quality systems.

So review what your existing SEO plan covers, but check ChatGPT access separately. Google and OpenAI publish different requirements.

Before commissioning another strategy, work out where your current plan falls short.

## What actually changes between engines?

For Google’s generative AI features, your page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet. Your site must also be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console.

OpenAI says to leave OAI-SearchBot unblocked for ChatGPT summaries and snippets. It names GPTBot separately for excluding pages from possible training, so decide those permissions separately.

Google requires no special schema.org markup for its AI features and sets no ideal page length. Keep that guidance scoped to Google.

## Is AEO worth paying for on top of SEO?

Yes, if the extra work addresses something your current plan misses. Ask the supplier which pages or questions need attention and what they would change.

Compare the proposal with what is already being done. Google’s advice on SEO for AI search includes clear headings and expert knowledge or experience beyond common knowledge.

The proposal should be clear enough to judge whether your existing team could do the work. An acronym cannot make that decision for you.

## How should you judge the results?

Google’s Generative AI performance report in Search Console shows performance in its AI features. ChatGPT adds a marker to referral URLs so analytics tools can identify visits from its search results. Each tells you something different about how people find your content.

Keep those reports beside the buyer questions you test and the answers returned. Record which pages get cited and whether your company is recommended, then compare the results with enquiries and revenue.

Ask what changed and what the supplier would do next, including anything they cannot yet explain. That gives you more to work with than a debate about acronyms.

## Put the definitions into practice

## Common questions

### Which is better, SEO or GEO?

They address overlapping goals. SEO helps search understand content and people find it, while GEO focuses on visibility in generated responses. Google’s AI search features still use its core Search systems.

### Are AEO and GEO the same thing?

Their definitions overlap. AEO concerns content used by AI systems delivering direct answers; GEO concerns visibility in generated responses. Ask what the proposed work includes rather than assuming the labels separate it neatly.

### Do you need separate pages for SEO and AI search?

Google says SEO best practices remain relevant to its AI features and recommends writing for the audience, without an ideal page length. We would improve the page that serves the question before making another version for a label.
